Dear Colleagues:
The 7th Annual Ergonomics Design Competition for Student Teams opened for registration on Labor Day, September 2th. I strongly encourage you to notify your students about the competition and have them form one or more teams to represent your school, university or program.
Our Occupational Safety and Ergonomics (OSE) faculty, here at Auburn University, have found this event to be an excellent "teaching aid" and ties in very well with our Fall academic curriculum. It offers an opportunity for students to challenge themselves and compare their performance with their peers from a host of other outstanding universities. Moreover, it is a fun and rewarding experience with generous cash prizes. In 2012, more than 200 students from 30 teams from the US, Canada and Puerto Rico competed.
The competition web site is www.ErgonomicsDesign.org<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=46620052&msgid=390466&act=BR75&c=705150&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ergonomicsdesign.org%2F> where you will find the competition rules, key dates, and prizes for teams.
Key features for the student teams include:
* Extensive use of web-based resources, real- world problems from applied ergonomics practitioners, and professional judges.
* All the projects are we based and designed so teams can perform interviews and analyses on or near their campus.
* Teams can be any combination of graduate students or undergraduate students.
* While team members should have an interest in ergonomics, they can include students in safety, kinesiology, health, medical, psychology, engineering, physical or occupational therapy, physiology, and any of the other disciplines found in the wide field of ergonomics.
* All teams and their faculty advisors receive a full, professional-grade license for eTools SHOP along with the training to use it.
* This is a global competition! Because of the web-based nature of the competition, teams may compete from any country or location.
The eTools PRIZE will be presented to the winning team at an eTools Users Group meeting, held in conjunction with a major conference (e.g., ACE, HFES, AIHCE, ASSE, AEC, NSC) where a travel grant up to $5,000 will be provided for the winning team. In addition to the travelling trophy, the 1st place team receives an award plaque, individual certificates, and $300 for each team member. The 2nd place team receives an award plaque, individual award certificates, and $200 for each team member. Other Top 5 Teams receive $150 per team member and Honorable Mentions also receive an award plaque, individual award certificates, and $100 for each team member. In 2013, more than $15,000 in cash prizes were given to students.
In summary, this is an "awesome" and inexpensive opportunity for your students and a great practical teaching aid that will complement your ergonomics instruction and classes.
Sincerely,
Rob Thomas
