Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering<http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/mie> at the University of Iowa invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of design and manufacturing effective Spring or Fall 2014. Candidates for senior ranks will be also considered. An earned doctorate in industrial or mechanical engineering or a related discipline is required. Preference will be given to candidates in the areas of engineering design theory, sustainable design, additive manufacturing, and design for manufacturing. Prospective candidates with interests in design form, arts, human aspects of design, and social and global considerations are particularly encouraged to apply. Industrial experience in the field of design and manufacturing is desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate actively in a newly formed multidisciplinary cluster in digital public arts and humanities http://now.uiowa.edu/2013/06/new-faculty-cluster-public-digital-arts encompassing research and education. The faculty candidate will complement the existing University of Iowa expertise to form the core of this ambitious initiative aiming at fostering creativity. Participation in the initiative will be an important component of faculty performance evaluation.

The position offers collaborative opportunities with departments, centers, and institutes in engineering and health sciences, e.g., Center for Computer-Aided Design, National Advanced Driving Simulator, and as well as numerous corporations, including Caterpillar, Deere, and Rockwell Collins.

The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Programs offer excellent opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration with various engineering and science departments and research centers. The MIE Department is a home of innovative research and innovative teaching activities. Faculty responsibilities include effective classroom teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in industrial engineering or mechanical engineering, developing curricula and laboratories, supervising M.S. and Ph.D. students, publishing journal articles, and establishing and maintaining an externally funded research program that contributes to the overall goals of the College of Engineering.  Effective communication and leadership skills are vital. Teaching experience is desirable. Salary and benefits are excellent.
