*_Abstract_*

This lecture will review the history of human-system modeling and pose
several challenges for the future. Many of the human-system models in
use today emerged from government sponsored research by the military and
NASA in problems such as control, communication, signal detection and
decision-making. Current modeling challenges in industry, government and
health care include human-computer cooperation and allocation of
function between human operators and automation. In the future
human-system engineering models will have to combine the language and
scientific knowledge from both physical science and human science
disciplines, which thus far has not been very successful. Further, we
need to find ways by which models can interact, both in their
development and their use, with a much broader swath of society than
just engineers.

*_Biographical Sketch_*

Dr. Sheridan is a Professor of Engineering and Applied Psychology
Emeritus in the departments of Mechanical Engineering and
Aeronautics/Astronautics at MIT. He and his students have contributed to
modeling human performance, human-automation interaction, telerobotics,
virtual reality and safety though over 200 technical papers and five
books. Dr. Sheridan was President of Human Factors and Ergonomic
Society and the Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society (IEEE) and has
various awards from these as well as from the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers, the International Ergonomics Association and the
American Institute of Engineering Societies. He has chaired or served on
numerous committees of the National Research Council. He has a ScD from
MIT and an honorary doctorate from Delft University of Technology,
Netherlands. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in
1995. He is a Purdue graduate.
