Lean Student Paper Competition 2013

Sponsored by J T. and Late Carol S. Black

IIE Lean Division

 

Purpose: 

The Student Paper Competition will be held each year to honor outstanding
papers in the field of lean research and practices. The papers should
demonstrate or describe the use of techniques such as simulation, lean
principle implementation, alternative designs, Kaizen implementation, etc.
Both undergraduate and graduate students and design teams are invited to
submit papers. The award will be given each year at the IIE Annual
Conference if there is a suitable recipient. 

 

Three awards may be given upon recommendation of the selection committee.
The winners must present their papers in the ISERC Lean Systems Track at the
2013 IIE Annual Conference. All authors will receive a certificate stating
place awarded. The awards will be given at the annual Honors & Awards
Banquet. There will be reserved seating at the banquet for the winners, but
only the lead author of the first place paper received a complimentary
ticket to the Honors & Awards Banquet. Their names will not be announced on
Sunday. Their names will be announced either Monday or Tuesday just before
the keynote address. Their names will be on the scrolling power point Monday
and Tuesday morning as people enter the room for the keynote speakers. The
first place winner paper will be included in the IIE Annual Award list. The
lead authors of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place papers will receive the
following awards, which they may share with any co-authors at their
discretion:

 

First Place: $600 and complimentary annual conference registration and
Honors & Awards Banquet ticket

Second Place: $300

Third Place: $100

 

Eligibility Criteria:

The following conditions apply to submissions for this competition: 

1.       The applicant must be a full time student at the time of
submission.

2.       The paper must present original research results.

3.       The research must have been conducted while the applicant was a
student.

4.       The paper must not have won or been considered for an award in
another competition. 

5.       At least one author must be an IIE member and present the paper at
the 2013 Annual Conference, May 18-22, 2013, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

6.       Winning papers will appear on the IIE Lean Division Website.

7.       Authors will be asked to sign an ethics statement stating that they
are full time students and that the research and writing are their own work.

8.       Advising by a non-student is allowed, such as an academic or
industry advisor.  However, only students can be authors or co-authors since
this is a student competition.

 

Important Dates:

Submission deadline: December 15, 2012

Winner Announcement: January 31, 2013

 

Paper Guidelines:

Authors must follow the ISERC 2013 paper guidelines since the winning papers
will be published in the ISERC proceeding. The paper formatting guidelines
are available at the www.iienet.org/Annual.

 

Submission:

Each paper must be submitted in electronic format (.PDF file) to the
Committee Chair, Dr. Ahad Ali ( <mailto:aali at ltu.edu> aali at ltu.edu) to be
received no later than December 15, 2012.
