Research in an Engineering Management Career

Thursday, April 5, 2012 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT[cid:hope_encode_maker at 0001]
Sponsored by Society for Engineering and Management Systems (SEMS)
Presenter: Dr. Robert C. Waters, Professor Emeritus of Engineering Management in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the George Washington University.
Bob Waters will discuss the role of research, the search for new knowledge, in engineering management; this including differentiating between engineering management [EM] and systems engineering [SE]. Also, he distinguishes between academic research and industrial research, and will reflect on the impact of research, teaching and service on an academic career, including the role of tenure in the process. He will examine the political aspects of a dissertation, and the importance of out-the-Department experts in developing the topic. Following tenure, he suggests developing industrial and/or government contacts through meetings, publications, visits, sabbaticals, exchanges, etc. to build outside relationships to support an ongoing research program.
Bob is a Professor Emeritus of Engineering Management in the School of Engineering and Applied Science the George Washington University. He was chair of the Department of Engineering Management, 1984 through 1989 and 1997 through 2000. Bob has had successful careers in industry and academia. Following graduation from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a B.S. in mechanical engineering, he joined the General Electric Company on the three-year Manufacturing Management Program. Then he became a supervisor in the Instrumentation Shop of the Jet Engine Department. Later, he joined the Space Technology Laboratories (now TRW Systems Group) as a cost effectiveness engineer.
Bob has been the lead professor for courses in management of research and development, transportation management, and finance. His research has been sponsored by the Corps of Engineers, the departments of the Interior and Transportation.

Getting Your EM Research Published: What not to do...

Sponsored by Society for Engineering and Management Systems (SEMS)
Presenter: Toni Doolen, Professor, School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering and an Associate Dean of the University Honors College, Oregon State University.
Getting your research published is critical in the early stages of your career as a new faculty member. For many new faculty, feedback on your early manuscripts may result in a sense of inadequacy. Having a manuscript rejected is a disheartening experience . In many instances, however, manuscripts get rejected or returned to authors without review, not because the research itself is poorly executed, but because the manuscript does not present the research in the context expected for a particular journal. Factors such as the mismatch between the research topic and the editorial aims of the journal, writing style, and not linking research to previously published research from a particular journal can influence an editor's early decision on a manuscript. The goal of this webinar is to provide an overview of the review process used by most peer-reviewed journals. The webinar will discuss things that authors should avoid when submitting their work to refereed journals. While this webinar won't likely save all authors from getting the dreaded rejection, the goal of the webinar is to minimize those preventable mistakes made by early-career authors to increase the likelihood of getting a revise/resubmit and ultimately an "accept" decision.
Toni is a Professor in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering and an Associate Dean of the University Honors College at Oregon State University. She also serves as the Associate Head for Undergraduatate Programs in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering. She is the editor for Engineering Management Journal.

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT
[cid:hope_encode_maker at 0003]Sponsored by Society for Engineering and Management Systems
Presenter: Dr. Srinivas (Sri) Talluri, Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management at Michigan State University
Research publications in quality journals is the most important criterion in tenure and promotion decisions at major research universities. This seminar discusses the keys to getting your research published with emphasis on selecting appropriate research areas, writing a publishable paper, successfully navigating the review process, balancing multiple research projects, targeting the right journals for your work, and other aspects that are critical in the publication process. We will also discuss specific guidelines associated with the review/revision process at top-tier journals.
Srinivas (Sri) Talluri is a Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management at Michigan State University. His research interests are in the areas of purchasing/supply chain management, technology evaluation and justification, and performance evaluation and business process improvement. He has more than 50 journal publications in a variety of academic journals including the IIE Transactions, Decision Sciences, Journal of Operations Management, International Journal of Production Research, Production and Operations Management Journal, European Journal of Operational Research, and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and has presented papers in various national and international conferences. Dr. Talluri serves as a Department Editor for IEEE Transactions and Engineering Management, Associate Editor for the Decision Sciences Journal and the International Journal of Production Research, editorial review board member for Production and Operations Management and other journals.
