Industrial and Systems Engineering Colleagues
You constitute "the best people in the transportation area" whom I know, so I am passing along this announcement from Prof. Mike McNally. I have worked with Mike and his various UC Irvine colleagues in the Institute of Transportation Studies, the Department of Economics, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Merage School of Business, and the School of Social Ecology in several different capacities over the years. USC and UCI have a long tradition of institutional collaboration. Our best doctoral students have taught classes for their programs. Their best doctoral students have taught courses for us at USC. UC Irvine is a fine place with very good people. The university is an environment where applied mathematics and social science research agendas actually do inform each other, and their collective transportation programs account for a significant share of this success.
My own intellectual investment in urban planning is a version of public sector industrial and systems engineering, so this is the kind of position that would appeal to me. UC Irvine does not have an ISE program, but they are very strong in allied areas that touch transportation where a talented ISE scholar could certainly make his or her way. Also, and I want to be unambiguous about this, Southern California is paradise. Irvine, in Orange County, is what you get when you combine paradise with a master planned community.

Subject: Planning Position at UCI
Jim:
With Marlon Boarnet heading to USC in January, UCI's planning department is seeking a replacement. The position is fairly broadly defined, although it requires a Planning degree and quantitative skills.
Those of us in transportation are trying to get the best people in the transportation area to apply. We'd appreciate you letting qualified candidates know about the position (ad attached).
Mike
