[Iefac.list] Making a decision to use an ERP Systems

In the course of teaching an ERP course, a question has come up which I need
help to answer: While discussing the issues and approaches being used in the
selection of an ERP vendor, a student asked the question: why should an
organization use an ERP systems?  In other words, what are the steps taken
to determine if an organization needs an ERP system?  The student's point of
view was that the vendor selection requires that an organization has made a
decision to use an ERP system.

 

In scanning the literature, I could not discover where I could find the
answer to this question.  Therefore, I am requesting your assistance in
identifying sources to answer the above question from a student and also to
point me to the literature where such an answer can be found.
