PhD Research Assistant Position
Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial Engineering
Penn State University

In June 2011, PSU was the recipient of a major five-year award to support its Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), which aims to accelerate the translation of scientific discovery into methods for improving public health. The scope of the initiative is massive: it supports work across bioinformatics, genomics, to clinical research studies – all to improve people’s health.

In order to be truly effective at meeting this aim, quality and statistics principles have been used to develop a user-centric tracking and monitoring (UCTM) framework for monitoring the overall effort. Within this framework, several research issues have been identified. These include the development of a model of adherence to UCTM; the exploration of network analysis applied to UCTM; and the comparative effectiveness of UCTM versus other tracking approaches.

A PhD research assistant (RA) position has been created to tackle these issues. The RA will be co-advised by Harriet Black Nembhard, PhD and Larry Sinoway, MD. Dr. Nembhard is a professor of industrial engineering as well as the lead investigator for tracking and evaluation for the CTSI. Dr. Sinoway is a professor of medicine at Penn State Hershey and is the director of the CTSI. The successful candidate will be aligned academically with the industrial engineering department and will be required to meet all of the PhD requirements of that program. S/he will also have unique opportunities for collaborative work across engineering and medicine as affiliate of the CTSI.

Applicants should have an earned master’s degree in Industrial Engineering or Operations Research. In addition they should feel comfortable engaging in collaborative research across disciplines and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. A cover letter, resume, and transcript should be sent to Dr. Harriet Black Nembhard at hbnembhard at psu.edu with the subject line IE-CTSI RA POSITION. These materials will be reviewed and the candidates advised as to whether they should continue with the formal graduate school application process. The deadline for that process is January 15, 2012. The start date for the position is Fall 2012.

Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity, and the diversity of its workforce.
