 Dear Colleagues,

The Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) is sponsoring the Work Systems Research Track at the 2012 Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference (ISERC).  The ISERC is the new name for the Industrial Engineering Research Conference (IERC).  The ISERC, which is part of the IIE Annual Conference and Expo, is a forum for exchanging knowledge and discoveries in the industrial and systems engineering research community.

Work Systems Division (formerly Work Measures and Methods) has changed its name as part of a modernization strategy. A generalized definition of a “ Work System ” is as follows:

A work system is a system in which human participants and/or machines perform work using information, technology, and other resources to produce products and/or services for internal or external customers.

Typical business organizations contain work systems that procure materials from suppliers, produce and deliver products or services to customers, find customers, create financial reports, hire employees, coordinate work across departments, and perform many other functions. The work system concept is a common denominator for many types of systems that operate within or across organizations. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_systems

As track chairs of the Work Systems Division Research Track, we would like to encourage you to contribute to the conference by submitting an abstract.  Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to present their work in ISERC sessions. Each session will be 75 minutes and have 3 or 4 presenters. Abstracts may be submitted to the following (3) Work Systems categories:

Three (3) Research Conference catagories

    1. Fundamentals of Work Systems found in Science, Mathematics, & Engineering. Topics include:

        1. Systems Thinking, Theory, and Dynamics.
        2. Work Systems Diagramming Techniques.
        3. Probability & Statistics (Time Series, Time Standards, Improvement Curves, Queuing, Sample Size, Accuracy and Precision, etc)
        4. Mathematics of Motion (Velocity, Acceleration, Time and Displacement)
        5. Ergonomics (Physical, Cognitive, & Organizational)
        6. Work Physics and Mechanics
        7. Human Systems Design Standards
        8. Terminology, Nomenclature, and Definitions for Work Systems.
    2.
Measuring/Modeling Work in a modern world requires a systems perspective.   Topics include:

        1. Methods for Measuring and Modeling Work, Workflows, and Work Systems
        2. Methods for Measuring Ergonomics and Physical Demand
        3. Traditional Methods for Work Measurement (time/motion study, work sampling)
        4. Technology for Measuring Work, Workflows, and Work Systems
    3.
Work Systems Analysis and Design (Theoretical). Topics include:

        1. Methods for Designing Work as a System
        2. Methods Analysis and Work Design (Traditional)
        3. Methods for Ergonomic and Physical Demand Analysis
        4. Anthropometry and Biomechanics in Product/Process Design
        5. Correlating Product/Process Design to Productivity, Quality, & Ergonomic Risk
        6. Methods for Work Systems Analysis (Efficiency, Capacity, Capability, Potential, etc)
        7. Concurrent/Collaborative Product/Process Design for Mfg, Assembly, Test,
        8. Technology for Work Systems Analysis and Design

We encourage all presenters to submit a full length paper for the conference proceedings.  The papers should contain results that are significant and have archival value to the industrial and systems engineering research community; however, the papers are more limited in scope and length than a full-length journal paper.  Full papers have a ten-page limit and will undergo a double-blind peer review process.  All accepted papers are indexed by ProQuest.  Presentations without a paper are acceptable, but will not be indexed in the conference proceedings.

The important deadlines for the conference are:

Abstract submissions: November 11, 2011
Notification: December 9, 2011
Submission of full papers (optional but encouraged): January 13, 2012
Notification of paper acceptance: February 24, 2012
Final version of full paper due: March 9, 2012
Presenting author registration deadline: April 1, 2012

If your abstract or paper is accepted: (a) you or a co-author must register for the conference by April 1, 2012 (presentations/papers without an author registered for the conference will be withdrawn from the program and the proceedings); (b) you or a co-author must attend and present the paper at the conference; and (c) we ask that you be ready to serve as a reviewer for fellow authors and follow review deadlines.

There are also opportunities to organize invited sessions, panels, or tutorials.  In addition to research presentations, the annual conference offers many opportunities for attendees, including the Applied Solutions Conference program, plant tours, networking, and keynote speakers.

We look forward to seeing you in Orlando!

Regards,
