12th International Material Handling Research Colloquium (IMHRC 2012)
25- 28 June 2012 ▪ Gardanne, France

The College Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE) is soliciting extended abstracts for the 12th International Material Handling Research Colloquium (IMHRC) to be held on 25-28 June 2012 in Gardanne, France. Gardanne is located in the beautiful Provence region of France. The academic host is École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne (EMSE).    

Purpose

The purpose of the Colloquium is to share world-class research accomplishments, projects and trends in the field of material handling, facility logistics and intralogistics. It aims to facilitate dialog and collaborative research by teams of university researchers on leading edge topics of interest to end users as well as technology and solutions providers. The Colloquium operates on an immersion philosophy of complete participation by all participants in all the Colloquium events. The Colloquium program includes a mix of invited presentations, facilitated discussions, poster sessions, facility tours and social events. 

Papers Solicited

Papers for the Colloquium are requested from researchers performing work in material handling, facility logistics, intralogistics, facility planning and design, supply chain planning/execution or closely related fields of study. Papers are encouraged from both university based and industry-based researchers (both the supplier and end-user communities).

Research and development topics eligible for inclusion are those addressing issues related to the planning, design, selection and/or  operation of manufacturing, warehousing/distribution, logistics and service facilities, equipment and systems, as they relate to the movement, storage, control and protection of material flowing through supply chains as part of production and distribution systems.

Authors are encouraged to submit a paper on their recently completed or ongoing research, structured according to one of the three following types:

• System paper introducing a new material handling logistics system, technology and/or application, along with a preliminary modeling approach, with an emphasis on a rich description and justification of the system/application.

• Modeling paper focusing on a type of facility, system or equipment and addressing its key problematic facets, describing these in depth, justifying the importance of addressing them, introducing a formal model and a solution methodology, and presenting testing results.

• Paradigm paper rigorously introducing a new paradigm or framework for thinking, exploring, designing, representing and modeling facilities, systems or equipment, aiming to open breakthrough innovation avenues towards highly improved performance and sustainability.

Although the three bullets above form the preferred research types, other material handling and logistics related research will be considered if the authors clearly demonstrate creativity and innovation that will contribute to the value of the IMHRC.

Those receiving this Call are encouraged to share it with potentially interested co-workers and colleagues.

Submissions should include the list of authors with their affiliation and status, an extended abstract, identification of the presenting author and his/her engagement to participate for the entire duration of the colloquium, and request for participation of a doctoral co-author if so desired.

Extended abstracts for the IMHRC are typically two to five pages in length, quickly helping the reader understand the scope of the work, the type of research (of the three bulleted types identified above) and its expected impact on advancing previous work related to the subject area. Figures and references are encouraged and will aid in the reviewers understanding.

Submissions should be emailed to Mike Ogle, CICMHE Managing Director at MHIA (mogle at mhia.org), no later than 15 January 2012.

Review and Selection

Participation in the colloquium is by invitation only, based on a competitive review process of the extended abstracts. As only forty to fifty papers are accepted, the IMHRC brings together the world’s best researchers.

The criteria for paper selection include:

• Evidence of original work, new knowledge or design problem solutions;

• Potential for the transfer to actual industrial practice;

• Alignment with the above guidelines regarding scope and types of papers;

• Readability of the paper and respect of format guidelines.

Due to its highly selective nature, the colloquium does not accept papers solely written by students and/or postdocs and requires that the presenting author hold a full-time faculty appointment or be an industrial researcher. In order to foster stimulation towards research excellence, a limited number of doctoral students near completion or anticipating completion at the time of the IMHRC will be invited to attend along with a sponsoring co-author professor who serves as the presenting author. Explicit request for being considered for such doctoral participation in the colloquium should be expressed in the submission by the sponsoring professor. The highly selective process requires inclusion of the doctoral student’s curriculum vita.

Following review of the extended abstracts, formal invitations to participate will be sent by 1 February 2012.

Invited participants must submit their full papers no later than 30 April 2012. Papers should strictly follow the format guidelines that will be made available on the website of the Colloquium. Paper length is to be between 8 and 20 pages including figures, tables and references.

All participating authors will also provide a poster synthesizing the paper contribution, due by 1 June 2012. The poster should follow the format guideline and template that will be made available on the web site of the Colloquium. Poster sessions are generally viewed as one of the highest valued activities of the IMHRC.

Publication of Proceedings

All papers will be available and distributed via the web in advance of the Colloquium. Papers presented at the colloquium will be published in a hardbound book format as “Progress in Material Handling Research: 2012”, the latest vintage in the renowned series of books. Conditions and Costs for Participating

By accepting an invitation to attend, participants are agreeing to submit a final paper by 30 April 2012 and a poster by 1 June 2012, and to attend the full duration of the Colloquium. The greatest value of IMHRC lies in the interaction between participants during the entire event. Those that do not attend the full duration must pay a registration fee equivalent to the full cost of individual participation and are not eligible for assistance described as follows:

On-site costs will be paid by the sponsors (cost of housing based on shared double occupancy, organized meal functions and social gatherings) for all invited academic researchers registered as the primary presenter of research. Participation by co-authors must be approved and requires payment of a registration fee. Additional costs apply for a single room. Travel costs to and from the IMHRC hotel will be paid by the attendees. Spouse, guest, co-author registration expenses are paid by the attendees prior to the event (fee schedule provided upon acceptance).

Brief History and Sponsors

The first Research Colloquium took place June 1990 on the corporate campus of Litton Industrial Automated Systems in Hebron, Kentucky, USA. The success of this Colloquium prompted the conduct of other Colloquia: in 1992 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA at the corporate headquarters of Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley; in 1994 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA at the corporate headquarters of Rapistan Demag Corporation; in 1996 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, at the corporate headquarters of Vanderlande Industries; in 1998 in Chandler, Arizona, USA at the headquarters of Motorola Corporation; in 2000 in York, Pennsylvania, USA at the headquarters of St. Onge Company; in 2002 in Portland, Maine, USA at the headquarters Southworth International; in 2004 in Graz, Austria on the campus of Technical University of Graz; in 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA at the headquarters of Daifuku America; in 2008 in Dortmund, Germany hosted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) at the University of Dortmund; and in 2010 in Milwaukee, USA, sponsored by RedPrairie and HK Systems, with the Center for Supply Chain Management at Marquette University serving as academic host.

Eleven hardbound books have been published as a direct result of the Colloquia based on the research issues presented and discussed. All past Colloquia were sponsored by the College Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE) and the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), plus local corporate and academic hosts. In addition, the first six colloquia were co-sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).
