Rochester Institute of Technology
Department Head
Industrial and Systems Engineering
DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
The Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. The department head will help guide the growth of Industrial & Systems Engineering in research while maintaining high standards for academic excellence in teaching. Appointments at the rank of full or associate professor will be considered with an anticipated start of July, 2011. The department head provides leadership and direction for the department with oversight in areas such as research, curriculum development, the acquisition of external funding, facilities, faculty and staff recruiting and retention, and budgeting. The department head reports to the Dean of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering and interacts with other leaders of the college, institute, industry, and state and federal agencies. We are seeking individuals who are committed to contributing to RIT’s core values, honor code, and statement of diversity.
THE COLLEGE/ DEPARTMENT:
The current environment for Industrial and Systems Engineering at RIT is dynamic and exciting. From 2004 to 2009, enrollment in the ISE department’s graduate programs more than doubled to its current size of 67 students, and undergraduate enrollment grew 60% to 187 students. The department had its largest graduating class ever in May, 2009. As a response to this enrollment growth, the faculty has also grown in size. Indeed, one-third of the faculty is new to the department in the past three years. The department also benefits from RIT’s stature as a university. U.S. News and World Report ranks RIT #2 in “best value, regional universities” in the northeast, and RIT ranks in their top 10 list of “programs that work.” Additionally, research expenditures have increased nearly 100% over the past five years. There have been two major building expansions to the Kate Gleason College of Engineering in the past twelve years, and each has enhanced the infrastructure available for Industrial & Systems Engineering. At present, RIT is in the final planning stages of yet another new building, which will house new degree programs in biomedical and chemical engineering.
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is one of the largest private universities in the U.S., attracting students from all 50 states and 100 countries. RIT has been recognized on The Chronicle of Higher Education’s “Great Colleges to Work For” list for two consecutive years. RIT was cited in six different categories: Professional/Career Development Program, Compensation and Benefits, Tuition Reimbursement, 403b or 401k (retirement plan), Disability Insurance, and Life Insurance.
The Kate Gleason College of Engineering has established its reputation as preeminent in career-oriented engineering education with a rapidly growing commitment to research. It offers bachelor degree programs in biomedical, chemical, computer, electrical, industrial, mechanical and microelectronic engineering, and comprehensive, innovative graduate programs in a range of engineering disciplines including a broad-based cross-disciplinary doctoral degree in microsystems engineering.
Rochester, located on Lake Ontario, is the 79th largest city in the United States and the third largest city in New York State. The Greater Rochester region, which is home to nearly one million people, is rich in cultural and ethnic diversity, with a population comprised of 20% African and Latino Americans and another 7% of international origin. It is also home to the largest deaf community per capita in the U.S. Rochester ranks 7th among the “10 Best Cities to Raise a Family” by Child Magazine; 6th among 379 metropolitan areas in “Best Places to Live in America” by Places Rated Almanac; 1st in Expansion Management Magazine’s ranking of metropolitan areas having the best “Quality of Life in the Nation”; and is among Essence Magazine’s “Top 10 Cities for Black Families.” Rochester was twice named one of “America’s Friendliest Cities” by American Demographics Magazine.
