Process Industry Division (PID) Student Paper Competition

The IIE Process Industry Division (PID) is pleased to announce its first
International Student 2011 Problem Competition. The winner will present
the solution at the IIE Annual Conference and Expo to be held May 21-25,
2011 in Reno, Nev.
The solution submission is about a realistic example of problems
currently found in the process industry. The problem addresses
production and workforce planning for a batch processing facility.
Students will be provided with a problem statement, a given set of
assumptions and data already collected. Students should be able to
demonstrate IE tools and problem solving skills to provide a viable
solution around inventory, batch production and cost.

Qualification
In order to be qualified for the recognition and award, the students
must: (a) submit a paper (invited or contributed) for the conference
using the usual submission process, (b) fill out an application and (c)
present their work at the IIE Annual Conference and Expo solutions
track. Candidate papers will come from those submitted to the PID Track
or other venues and accepted through the regular submission process. The
student must be the primary author (first author) of the paper as well
as the presenting author. If multiple students are co-authors, all of
their names should appear before their advisor(s) in the list of
authors. All papers submitted must contain process industry* related
solutions or applications.

Eligibility
Only those who will be students (undergraduate or graduate students) on
the application submission date are qualified for the best student
paper. That means those who will graduate on or after May 2011 will be
eligible for the award. For this year alone, being a new award, we will
also allow students that will graduate in December 2010. Finally,
students must be current members of IIE at the time of paper submission
to be eligible for the award.

Judging Criteria
Judging will be based on solutions approach, problem-solving methodology
and organization presentation. The undergraduate or graduate winner will
receive a cash award of $1,000, an additional $500 towards travel
expenses plus the PID international trophy, the second and third place
winners will receive certificates of recognition.
