Systems Scientist Position in Smart Transportation Systems

Carnegie Mellon's H. John Heinz III College invites applications for a System Scientist position in the area of smart transportation systems. This position will support a university-wide research effort, Traffic 21 (see http://www.heinz.cmu.edu/traffic21/index.aspx), which focuses on developing innovative technologies and policy to support next-generation solutions for traffic, transportation and mobility problems.
A successful candidate for this position will especially benefit from the interdisciplinary research environment at the Heinz College where faculty and PhD students with training and expertise in operations research, machine learning, engineering, economics and organizations work together on societal problems. The college is also home to the iLab (see http://www.heinz.cmu.edu/ilab) which involves faculty and PhD students from machine learning, operations research, statistics, information systems and marketing groups from across the university. The College consists of two schools, a school of information systems management and a school of public policy and management. Students enrolled in programs at the two schools support applied research through projects.
Qualifications:

1. Candidates will hold a PhD in the one of the following areas: Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Statistical Machine Learning, Computer Science, or Computational Economics or a related field.

2. The candidate should be able to work independently and expect to develop an externally funded research program.

3. Strong project management, communication and interpersonal skills.

4. Interest in and capability to work with large data sets and to build prototype software implementations and proof of concept systems.

5. The candidate must have demonstrated, strong, problem-driven quantitative modeling expertise in areas including, but not limited to:
*	Economic modeling
*	Applied probability and stochastic optimization (e.g., MDP)
*	Deterministic and Combinatorial optimization
*	Approximation algorithms

Qualified applicants should send their curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, and the names and addresses of at least three references to: traffic21-search at andrew.cmu.edu. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.
