IE Faculty Colleagues,

Although the position advertised below will reside in Mechanical
Engineering, it is for a manufacturing and design person who will
collaborate significantly with faculty members in the Department of Decision
Sciences and Engineering Systems (DSES).

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering at
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has initiated an aggressive search for a
tenure track faculty member at the assistant professor level in the areas of
advanced manufacturing and design. As chair of the search committee, I
invite you to share this cover letter and attached advertisement with
graduating PhD students, colleagues who have students graduating, post-docs,
PhD research staff, and any suitably qualified individuals interested in an
academic career and urge them to respond quickly. The department and
affiliated research centers currently performs related fundamental and
applied research in the areas of composites manufacturing, fuel cell
manufacturing, rapid prototyping and tooling, automation and robotics, IC
manufacturing, and nanomanufacturing. However, we are interested in both
strengthening these existing research thrusts and broadening our research
base into other areas as well including, but not limited to, sustainable
design and manufacturing and the design and manufacturing of energy-related
products and systems. The interested candidate should also be well grounded
in traditional manufacturing and design theory/practice to support related
undergraduate and graduate courses.

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering (MANE) at
RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE has the unprecedented opportunity to hire
multiple faculty at all ranks in all programs comprising the Department (ME,
AE and NE). This includes three endowed chair professorships, one in each of
the three programs. This is part of a university-wide strategic effort to
grow the School of Engineering by more than 25% and firmly place Rensselaer
as one of the premier engineering schools in the country. This is a unique
opportunity for individuals with demonstrated multidisciplinary teaming and
leadership skills to create high-impact block-funded research programs. In
addition to strong teaching skills and the ability to develop an
internationally recognized research program at Rensselaer, we are looking
for individuals with a comprehensive vision as well as the skills needed to
integrate into a multidisciplinary department. At the same time, we are
committed to maintaining our outstanding reputation in undergraduate
education as well as to broadening our faculty diversity profile through
this process.

Rensselaer has several strategic research directions including
biotechnology, energy and environment, computation, and nanotechnology. The
recent establishment of the $100M Center of Computational Nanotechnology
Innovation promises to provide the fastest university-based supercomputer in
the world. Within MANE, control and dynamics, and manufacturing and design
ARE the priority areas of growth; and other research thrust areas include
nanostructured materials for next generation nuclear reactors, multiscale
computation and science, nuclear-biomedical imaging and diagnostics,
reducing thermal signatures of surface ships, fuel cell design and
manufacturing, composites manufacturing, and sustainable design. We seek
individuals to augment these thrusts as well as integrate new and existing
strengths into new thrusts.

Rensselaer is nestled in the Capital District of upstate New York. The
Adirondack and Catskill Mountains are nearby as are Lakes George and
Champlain. In addition to year round outdoor activities, the region is rich
with arts and entertainment. Competitive salary, benefits and start-up
packages will be offered commensurate with experience. Review of
applications will start on December 1, 2008, and will continue until all
positions are filled. Applicants should submit a resume, a statement of
professional interests and plans, as well as contact information for four
professional references to:
