Texas A&M University
Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering
TEES Associate Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Research Associate
in Systems Engineering Aspects
of Nuclear Smuggling Interdiction
The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering has one position opening for an Associate Research Scientist or a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a joint NSF and DNDO research project. The title of the position is dependent on the qualifications of the candidate. The position includes a competitive salary, health insurance and benefits, and is renewable for the remaining duration of the project.
The area of research is to study systems engineering aspects of nuclear smuggling interdiction. This is a 5-year, $7.5 million, multi-disciplinary research grant that encompasses Nuclear Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, Social Sciences, and Systems Engineering. The overall goal of this effort is to develop new sensor systems to detect nuclear materials before they can be smuggled into the United States. The systems engineering focus is on (1) the design of a robust, re-configurable network of nuclear materials detectors across the US and allied countries, (2) dynamic screening of shipping containers based on chain-of-custody and geopolitical information, and (3) developing strategies for sequential screening of containers at the same or different interdiction points.
Eligibility: A completed (or close to completion) Ph.D. degree in industrial engineering, mathematics or a related quantitative field is required.
Preferred qualification and skills: High priority will be given to those who can make multi-year commitments. Preference will also be given to candidates with substantial experience in game theory; analytical modeling, particularly network and graph models; and/or stochastic systems.
The initial appointment for the position can start as early as the fall semester of 2008. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applicants should send a copy of their CV, along with a description of their main research interests and sample copies of published or working papers to:
