Filipi joins the CoES
Professor Zoran Filipi, from the University of Michigan, will join Clemson as the Timken Endowed Chair in Vehicle Design and Development. He is a world renowned scholar in automotive powertrain systems and a strong team player. He will bring much needed senior leadership and expertise in advanced powertrains at Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research. This area is one of the most critical in the nation’s path to energy independence and Filipi’s presence will be invaluable as Clemson works to produce the next generation of scientists and engineers needed to make important advances in the field. Filipi will be joining Clemson in January 1, 2012.
ME alum wins essay contest
James Mack (BS ME ’05) has won the 2011 Shell Energy for Tomorrow essay competition. The national competition, sponsored by Shell Oil and hosted by Time magazine. Essays described students’ visions that integrate technology and policy innovations to create sustainable energy future. Mack is currently a Ph.D. student in mechanical engineering with a minor in electrical engineering at Stanford University. His current work is on charge transfer in quantum dots, with applications to photovoltaics and advanced capacitors. He received a M.S. in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford. When he is not working, he enjoys outdoor sports and teaching as a certified flight instructor.
TBP honoree
Jennifer Johnson, a graduate student in civil engineering has been named a Tau Beta Pi Laureate by the engineering honor society. This honor recognizes TBP student members who outstandingly exemplify the "spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges." Award categories include arts, athletics, diverse achievements, and service.  This latest recognition underscores Johnson’s history of service to Clemson and the community.

She received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Clemson at the May Commencement in recognition of her influence for good, excellence in maintaining high ideals of living and genuine and disinterested service to others.
Johnson has volunteered for the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) outreach program called “It’s a Girl Thing” and has visited middle schools and conducted hands-on projects to educate young girls in the field of civil engineering. She serves as head counselor for the WISE Experience, an orientation program for incoming women who have been accepted into as engineering and science majors.
She is president of the Society of Women Engineers at Clemson and developed CU Engineering 101 as a way to reach out to high school girls to visit Clemson for a day to learn about engineering. Johnson volunteered as a coach for the varsity girls’ basketball team at D.W. Daniel High School, and has served in a volunteer capacity at the Mason Dixon Basketball received the Thea McCrary Student Award for Outstanding Service from the President’s Commission on the Status of Women. Tournament at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. She was recognized by the civil engineering department as outstanding senior and twice as outstanding junior. She also received the Thea McCrary Student Award for Outstanding Service from the President’s Commission on the Status of Women.

The South Carolina COBRE Center of Biomaterials for Tissue Regeneration is sponsoring an NIH Grant writing workshop that will feature Gary C. Schoenwolf, Ph.D., distinguished professor in the department of neurobiology and anatomy and adjunct professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of UtahSchool of Medicine. Professor Schoenwolf has been NIH funded for 30 years!
