After today's earnest distribution, the College Relations Office received notice of the following seminar, scheduled for Friday of this week.
Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is sponsoring a seminar featuring Steven R. Schmid, associate professor, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. Schmid will discuss Design of Minimally Invasive Orthopedic Implants. The presentation is scheduled for Friday, February 12, 2010 at 2:30 pm. in 132 Fluor Daniel. An abstract follows.
Schmid abstract: Minimal invasiveness has always been a design goal for the orthopedic implant industry. However, recent advances in surgical techniques, materials and instruments have allowed innovative new designs to come to the fore, allowing a simultaneous reduction in pain, surgery complexity, and rehabilitation time and cost while preserving existing implant costs. New, patient-driven technologies are encouraging designers to produce smaller implants for the same applications, and to rethink their existing design paradigms. Minimally invasive designs will be presented that fit into a design hierarchy identifying the emerging technologies. The first design class in the hierarchy consists of conventional designs that are inherently minimally invasive, possibly through the use of innovative surgical techniques or increased automation. The second form of implant in the hierarchy consists of implants that are assembled in vivo, so that larger and bulkier designs can be deployed through smaller incisions. The third design in the hierarchy consists of conventional designs that have been reduced in size because of materials advances or design innovations. The fourth class of implants are those that are self-deploying. Each class will be discussed and examples identified.
