Yesterday's earnest inadvertently omitted the date and time for the Pomeroy Colloquium. The presentation will take place Thursday, October 29, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. in the Kinard Auditorium (G01). Details are provided below.

Dr. Joshua M. Pomeroy
Quantum Processes and Metrology Group Atomic Physics Division
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Spectroscopy and Materials Science with Highly Charged Ions
Politics aside, we live in a predominantly neutral world, which make the abundant, extra-terrestrial highly charged ions (HCIs) an intrinsically exotic form of matter. This talk will highlight some of the recent activities at the NIST electron beam ion trap (EBIT), including: spectroscopy of heavy ions for fusion diagnostics; recent developments in the use of Fe XVII and Ni XVIII as intergalactic thermometers; and the use of HCIs as a novel process step in magnetic tunnel junction fabrication. The emphasis of the talk will be on the last topic, where the efficacy of HCI based nano-lithography will be discussed as well as the merits of using these exponentially sensitive electronic devices to consider fundamental ion-surface interaction phenomena.

Dr. Joshua Pomeroy is a staff scientist in the Quantum Processes and Metrology group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Marlyand.

Dr. Pomeroy is a graduate of Boston University (B.A., Physics, 1997), and Cornell University (Ph.D., Physics, 2002)

Postdoctoral researcher at Los Alamos National Lab (2002-2003).

During that time he received the Boston University Alumni Award for Excellence in Physics and the American Association of Physics Teachers Award and was selected as a Department of Education Fellow. Since joining the Atomic Physics Division at NIST in 2003, he has performed numerous experiments utilizing highly charged ions which span the fields of atomic physics, laboratory astrophysics, and materials science. Most recently, Dr. Pomeroy was made an adjunct faculty member of the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University.
