Dear Chemistry Major,

Our Career Success in Science and Engineering course will be offered
again this year as a 1 credit elective from 6:15 to 7:05 on Tuesday
nights in Hunter 158. This enjoyable and practical introduction to your
industrial engineering or science career is open to all college of
engineering and science junior and senior undergraduate and graduate
students interested in a career in industry.

Not only will this course enhance your resume, but it will also provide
a clear understanding of your future research and development working
environment which will help you avoid the land mines many students
encounter early on.

We are in our 4th year of teaching this course and it has been very
successful.

The course started here at Clemson as a NSF Discovery Corps grant and is
now being taught at Auburn and Virginia Tech, with elements also being
offered at Tennessee, Southern University, and Marquette.

The course topics involve both the linear and non-linear aspects of
career development including research project execution and
prioritization, salary and benefits, intellectual property, how to react
to performance reviews, career path options, insider's advice and more.
Assignments will provide stimulating interactive discussion on how to
succeed both personally and professionally in an industrial research
environment.

>From the second class, you will be part of a 5 member team and will
choose a technology to evaluate. Past technologies have included
artificial skin, cancer agent targeted delivery systems, hydrogen
storage systems, more efficient combustion catalysts, ceramic engines,
quantum dots, anti-aging products, fuel cell and gas separation
membranes, piezo materials, and even improved asphalt roads. The
students really get a running start on their career since they will have
had some hands on experience with these tools. The course is a lot of
fun.

I will teach all 14 sessions for continuity, although we do have
visiting lecturers for some topics. I also conduct career counseling
sessions, (which have been much more popular than I had imagined) and
can help students with their interviewing and job decision processes.

We are limiting the course to 25 students this year. Course enrollment
will be limited to 25 total. PLEASE JOIN US!
