Light snacks will be provided (ie- after seminar social type snacks). It shouldn't last very long, but come prepared to discuss issues concerning the VP position (if you have any other ideas as to how to handle the situation, or would like to run for VP, please email me before the meeting so we can have an organized discussion and possible solutions already out there). Also, we will be talking about a couple of social trips Tripp was planning, a few enrichment activities that have been discussed, and possible fund raisers for this semester. Again, if you have anything you would like discussed, please email me before Monday so it can be put on the agenda and we can keep the meeting as short as possible. If you have been a member of BMES in the past, membership runs from Jan-Dec, not summer to summer, as some others do, so it is time to renew. We did not have a student chapter this year, which cost some students the opportunity to apply for travel awards for the conference in LA. Therefore, we want to re-establish the chapter this year. We have to have 10-paid student members to do this. If you are a paid member, please send me your membership id and I will include you on the list ASAP. The deadline is approaching. A task force from our membership has been working hard to generate ideas for our website, marketing, and logo. We are asking for input and suggestions from the student membership in developing a tagline. This new tagline would describe our society and the identity of our membership in a short phrase that would appear following "Society for Biomaterials." Keep in mind that our society is composed of members from academia, industry, medicine, and the government. While the general focus of our membership is biomaterials, each member has a unique expertise in fields ranging from biology to chemistry, materials science, engineering, medicine, and policy. Some of these fields focus on the molecular, microscopic, and macroscopic aspects of materials while others on biological interactions with materials (whether with humans or other living organisms). In developing your ideas, consider finding a balance between being too broad and too specific so as to describe our society without leaving anyone out. Please send suggested taglines to Dan Lemyre at dlemyre at ahint.com by February 22, 2008, 2008 at 5pm EST. The student or chapter that submits the winning the tagline will receive a free registration to the SFB Fall 2008 Translational Research Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia (September 11-13, 2008). I have included a brief list of suggested taglines to demonstrate some of the important ideas that our tagline should encompass. Dear Graduate Students: Do you need funding to help pay costs associated with attending industry conferences, paper, or panel presentations? Please consider applying for a Professional Enrichment Grant administered by Graduate Student Government. Professional Enrichment Grants (formerly known as travel awards) are designed to aid graduate students with traveling costs associated with attending conferences for presenting papers, workshops and other field experiences. Priority funding is given to applicants who are presenting scholarly research on behalf of Clemson University. Graduate Student Government uses PEG's to recognize academic achievement for individuals sharing their research and findings to respective academic fields and associations at conferences, lectures, as well as panel and poster presentations. Students must be enrolled at Clemson University in a Masters or Ph.D. program to apply for a PEG. The application process is quite competitive but all graduate students are encouraged to apply. Applications for PEG's are accepted twice a year. The SPRING and SUMMER application period will include travel and conferences from January 1, 2008 through June 30, 2008 ONLY. The next application period will be February 18-22 that will cover SPRING and SUMMER travel. A link will be sent out the graduate student body via email on February 18th and an application form will be posted on the GSG website. The application will have specific instructions for the applicant. Applications will be due no later than February 22, 2008 at 4:30pm to the Union Desk (6th floor) in the University Union. Electronic applications will not be accepted. Decisions will be communicated to applicants no later than March 5, 2008. If you have questions about the application process, please feel free to contact me at connelb at clemson.edu. So, this weekend is our last chance to go snow tubing! Unless Scaly Mountain (www.scalymountain.com) says that it's too warm to snow tube, then this Saturday (March 1st) is the last tubing date of the season. I will call the resort tomorrow to confirm "all is go" for Saturday. If you guys don't mind replying to this email whether or not you'd like to attend this awesome excursion, then I can make a list and figure out how many cars we should take. Google Maps says that the drive should take just under and hour and a half to make; however, I'm positive that I've made the trip in just over an hour. The rate is $20.70 for 2 hours of awesome, and I suggest we try to arrive around lunch so that it's less crowded. I hope everyone can make it! We will leave Clemson @ 10 AM Saturday from the downtown parking garage to get there around 11:30. Even if you have emailed me to say you are going, please reply to this email again to confirm by tomorrow morning so we can plan how many cars to take (I will drive for sure). Also, the Dillard House (in Dillard,GA)-great food (www.dillardhouse.com/dining.php ) is an option for food after tubing- we can get food @ the mountain if wanted also. If everyone wants to go to the Dillard House, it is about 20 mins from Scaly Mt. and it will cost ~$20/person- it sounds like a lot, but you get massive amounts of food. Note: for tubing, Tripp said jeans are ok with a medium weight jacket (no too cold, so you may want to layer), but gloves and sunglasses are a must. Also, if you want to be safe, you may want to bring clothes to change into- just is case you get wet. I would suggest at least bringing extra socks.
