Dear Furman Community,

The first week of classes is in the books. It was different but still a great start to another academic year. We couldn’t be prouder of our students, faculty and staff. Out of the more than 2,330 students who are enrolled this semester, about 11% are remote learners. And, as you know, second- and third-year students are scheduled to return in September. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on campus at the appropriate time.

We have many to thank for ensuring our remote-learning options deliver the academically rich and engaging experience of a Furman education. We are so grateful to our faculty for adjusting their teaching approach, to ITS for installing all of the camera equipment and other technology in every classroom, to Facilities Services for rearranging classrooms and installing protective barriers, and to our students who are adapting to learn in new and different ways. We will continue to seek improvements to the quality of our education, both in person and online. Students, if you have questions or concerns about your remote or in-person coursework, please engage with your professors.

As we have seen around the country this week, several institutions that started in person have quickly moved to a remote-only environment because of outbreaks on campus or in their surrounding community. Our plan to maintain a healthy and safe campus is sound. With the collective commitment to the health and wellbeing of all, November 20 will arrive before we know it.

So far, in addition to the six asymptomatic, positive student-athletes back in July, we have had one student test positive for COVID-19 and currently have no students in quarantine. Some important reminders that will make the differences in keeping our numbers manageable:

  *   Physically distance 6 feet from others as much as possible and minimize close contact to less than 15 minutes.
  *   Stay in the same small groups as much as possible. Remember, who you spend time with will be the individuals who will also have to quarantine if any of you are infected or exposed.
  *   Don’t go to off-campus houses, apartments or bars. This is the primary reason why other institutions have been forced to go to remote-only learning.
  *   In fact, students should avoid leaving campus as much as possible.      *   Exception for roommates only when inside their rooms or apartments without guests.
     *   Exception for employees when inside their offices alone with the door closed.

The Furman community is holding our peers and colleagues accountable. We have received dozens of reports of Paladin Promise violations, all of which are being immediately investigated and addressed.   *   Hosting unapproved guests. Only approved Furman students are allowed in campus housing.
  *   Second- and third-year students coming to campus before September 11.
  *   Remote learners coming to campus for any reason this semester.

Again, there are those who are skeptical about the ability of college students to put others ahead of themselves and who doubt our ability to have a successful in-person fall semester. We don’t feel that way. We know that our students on campus want to remain on campus. Our sophomores and juniors want to join them. Our seniors want to graduate in person. And our first-year students want to remember their transition to college as an in-person experience.
