Chenjerai, Bryant and others that responded. Thank you. Let me propose this scenario: If I was a member of the organization and we allowed him to continue his set (and I stayed to listen), should I be looked upon as being in agreement w/him and stand the risk of being labeled?

Subject: Re: [Bgs-list] Did they do the right thing?
I think a key distinction here is whether he should be paid, versus whether he had the right to continue to perform.
I agree that (depending on what's in the contract) he might have a strong legal case for having performed his job and for compensation,
but I also think the students were well within their rights to kick him off-stage.
Here's why:
1. They invited him. He has no legal right to complete his entire set - he performs at their pleasure.
2. While they could have done better vetting, I think organizations still have the right to set the parameters of what they find to be acceptable. For example,
Imagine that you vetted a comedian for a Black History Month event - someone like HBO host Jon Oliver. But when Oliver gets on stage and begins to say "Fuck N&***" " and "I think its okay to kill Black people."
Should we avoid interruption because of a contractual arrangement?
No.
So the primary issue of remaining on stage or not is not what was agreed to in the contract but rather the perceived degree of offense. The economic and transactional ethics of contracts constrain us within an impoverished imagination of justice - as any person of color should know.
Should students increase their emotional endurance in a world that is certain to consistently offend them ? Perhaps.
But no one is required to endure disrespect. Especially at one's own event.
