From a community leader on the outside looking in.
1. The activities of the last week have caused some healthy dialogue, in my opinion
2. There are a lot of different ways to make Clemson University a better place and more inclusive
3. I feel confident that Clemson will be a much stronger institution going forward because of the tension that has been created recently
4. "Power concedes nothing without demand" by Fredrick Douglas
5. The bottom line, in my humble opinion, is depicted in the attached painting. "He Aint Heavy"
6. If we are doing what the painting says ,then we are all doing what is right. Malcolm vs Dr. King ( who cares?)

Subject: Re: [Bgs-list] Students arrested

So is it possible as African American faculty, staff and alumni to draft a strategic diversity plan as a response to our students concerns. This is not meant to replace or substitute what the administration duties are for formulating a diversity plan. This is simply a detailed document that outlines what we are currently doing and will be doing in the future to support our own students until administration wakes up. We need to let them know that they are not in this alone in this battle and we working 24/7 to transform Clemson into a place where African Americans can succeed. Just a thought

The idea that this protest went "directly to direct action" is both false and ahistorical But let me show you how wrong it is.

One of the reasons that the students who are leading this effort are so forthright is because they (almost all of them) are precisely the students who have been working within the institution, with administration, and student affairs, for over a year and a half!
What they have learned in that time is how empty that strategy was. They are some of the most engaged students on campus and they spent the last year and half taking time away from their primary job as students to do work that the university should have hired other folk to do.
The same was true of Clemson Alum Wallace Mack who set off the last round of protests. I'll never forget him enumerating the endless committees and meetings and negotiations he participated in before deciding that it was time to take to the streets. When he did the response from the university was instant - but of course deeply insufficient.

Hey,

I learned a few minutes ago that Benardo’s brother passed away suddenly and he’s on his way to be with his family. Just FYI in case you didn’t already know. Please pass this along to the BG’s group.
