[Bgs-list] Students arrested

The idea that this protest went "directly to direct action" is both false
and ahistorical But let me show you how wrong it is.

One of the reasons that the students who are leading this effort are so
forthright is because they (almost all of them) are precisely the students
who have been working within the institution, with administration, and
student affairs, for over a year and a half!

What they have learned in that time is how empty that strategy was. They
are some of the most engaged students on campus and they spent the last
year and half taking time away from their primary job as students to do
work that the university should have hired other folk to do.

The same was true of Clemson Alum Wallace Mack who set off the last round
of protests. I'll never forget him enumerating the endless committees and
meetings and negotiations he participated in before deciding that it was
time to take to the streets. When he did the response from the university
was instant - but of course deeply insufficient.
