Five Southern Wesleyan University education students were inducted into the Call Me MISTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) program during a ceremony Oct. 18 at Freedom's Hill Church, located on the university's campus in Central. Pictured from left are David Rogers, Byron Smith, Danny Hall, Shaquille Brown, Paul Ohanuka, Tyson Wright, Jonathan Boyer and Dorian Raines. Brown, Hall, Rogers, Raines and Smith were inducted as the newest students in the program, which selects college students who have high academic potential, a demonstrated commitment to teach and a potential to be servant-leaders.
Five inducted into Call Me MISTER
The Call Me MISTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) program inducted five new Southern Wesleyan University education students during a ceremony Oct. 18 at Freedom's Hill Church on the campus in Central.
Inducted were Shaquille Brown, a freshman Special Education major from Gaffney; Danny Hall, a freshman Special Education major from Seneca; David Rogers, a freshman Music Education major from Piedmont; Dorian Raines, a freshman Special Education major from Seneca; and Byron Smith, a transfer student from Greenville Technical College who is a junior Elementary Education major.
They will join current students in the MISTER program at Southern Wesleyan University: Tyson Wright, a senior Elementary Education major from Greer; Paul Ohanuka, a junior Elementary Education major from Greenville; and Jonathan Boyer, a sophomore Special Education major from Central.
Harvey Choplin, an adjunct instructor at Southern Wesleyan, oversees the MISTER program along with Justin Carter, associate vice president for student life.

Call Me MISTER, funded by a combination of public and private sources, selects college students from among underserved, socioeconomically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk communities who have high academic potential, a demonstrated commitment to teach and a potential to be servant-leaders. As graduates, students are expected to have an impact by returning to underperforming schools and communities to pursue their professional careers.

Students enrolled in Call Me MISTER will receive financial aid throughout the program. A goal of the program is to have graduates receiving financial aid commit to teaching in a South Carolina public school.
