I'll be there early and until 1PM, since I have an appointment at that hour.
Thanks for the clarification of BG, and for the honorable but ultimately
"unkeepable" promise to not focus on any conversation on Dexter if he is
present! (So much for "no formal leadership structure," and "hidden agenda."
;+} )

Subject: [Bgs-list] Lunch Wednesday & Clarification

Are you a BG?

I thought I would begin today's lunch announcement just providing a little
clarification on what a BG is. BG is an acronym for Black Guy. The BG's
lunch group is a support group formed at Clemson University in the 80's and
reactivated in the mid 90's. The group was originally designed to provide
African-American male faculty and staff members a chance to meet as a
collective and share a meal. The group has since expanded to include
community members, friends, relatives, graduate students, etc. and yes the
occasional White guy has been invited and included along with some women on
very special occasions. The group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of
every month at noon in various dining establishments in the Clemson,
Central, and Pendleton areas. Special consideration give to supporting
minority owned businesses.

The BG's lunch group provides us an opportunity for anyone who self
identifies as "Black" be they American, African, or from anywhere in the
Diaspora to come together put our titles aside, discuss issues of importance
to us as a collective, as well as gain support and reaffirm our humanity.
The BG's has no political affiliation, no hidden agenda, no formal
leadership structure, and serves as a vehicle for connecting over lunch. If
you are receiving this email it is because you have self identified as being
"Black", or of African decent, or have specifically been asked to be
included in the list. If someone you know that meets those criteria is not
receiving these emails please let us know and we can add that person to the
list. Participation and attendance is not mandatory we simply provide an
opportunity for some of us who work in isolation to have at least two times
a month where we can meet with others and commune.

Having said that this week's lunch will be held at the Japanese place in the
plaza across the street from the post office in Clemson. I can't remember
the name right now but if you know it tell the rest of us when you reply. We
will meet at noon and discuss things such as the marathon bombers, the NFL
draft, the White House press dinner and comedy show, and the end of another
great semester for those of you still functioning on academic calendars. As
always any other topic you would like to suggest is fair game, although I am
declaring a moratorium on any conversation that focuses on Dexter. We will
not pick on him at all this week. Yes I promise. Hope to see you there and
now that we have a clearer understanding of who is a BG maybe some more of
you will see fit to join us. Make sure and rsvp so I can keep count of how
many seats we will need. Thanks.
